Postal Data Sources and Methodology

How public government postal data is processed and presented on this site.

Dataset coverage

The current build contains 164,904 processed post-office records and 19,486 unique PIN codes across 36 states and Union Territories.

Data sources

The directory is prepared from India Post data, Open Government Data and other publicly available government data sources. Records are cleaned and normalised for consistent search and directory pages. This website is not presented as an official India Post service.

Fields used

The processed input includes postal circle, region, division, office name, PIN code, office type, delivery status, district, state/UT, latitude, longitude and DIGIPIN fields where available.

Coordinate quality

Coordinates are shown only when both latitude and longitude are finite and fall inside the official DIGIPIN-supported grid: latitude 2.5 to 38.5 and longitude 63.5 to 99.5. A rectangular DIGIPIN range is a validation envelope; it does not prove that a coordinate is correctly assigned to a particular office.

  • Usable coordinate pairs: 143,161
  • Incomplete coordinate pairs suppressed: 7,503
  • Invalid or out-of-range pairs suppressed: 0
  • Records with both coordinates missing: 14,240

DIGIPIN quality

DIGIPIN values are displayed only when they match the supported 10-character format. Invalid values are omitted rather than rewritten.

Known limitations

  • The source does not contain a reliable city field. District is not silently renamed as city.
  • Some PIN codes appear in records associated with more than one district, and a smaller number cross state/UT labels in the source.
  • Postal names and administrative labels can change over time.
  • Coordinates can be missing or source-assigned incorrectly even when they are inside the DIGIPIN grid; uses that require precise geolocation should verify coordinates independently.

Data processing

Invalid PIN records are excluded from public directory pages. Missing or invalid optional fields are omitted rather than replaced with guessed values.

To report a likely data issue, email support@pincodeapi.in with the PIN code, post-office name and a reliable supporting source where possible.
