What a PIN code is
PIN stands for Postal Index Number. In India, a PIN code is a six-digit number used by the postal system to identify a delivery area.
How the six digits work
The first digit represents a postal zone, the second represents a sub-zone, and the third helps identify a sorting district. The last three digits identify the delivery post office or the postal area handled from that sorting district.
One PIN can have several post offices
A single PIN code can be associated with more than one post-office record. That is why this website shows a collection of offices on each PIN page instead of forcing one office as the only answer.
PIN code, postal code and postcode
In India, the formal term is Postal Index Number, usually written as PIN or PIN code. In many other countries, similar systems are called postal codes or postcodes.
