Pincode API guide

What is a Pincode API?

Understand how a PIN code API returns postal information as JSON.

What a PIN code API does

A PIN code API accepts a postal lookup request and returns structured data, usually as JSON. An application can use the response to show postal offices, state, district, delivery status and other fields that the data source supports.

When it is useful

  • Address forms that need postal context after a user enters a PIN.
  • Post-office lookup tools.
  • PIN validation against a known postal dataset.
  • Business tools that need machine-readable postal records.

Important terminology

An Indian PIN is a six-digit postal identifier. A PIN may be shared by several post offices. The source used by this project does not contain a reliable city field, so district must not be presented as city merely to fill an address form.
